Why We Struggle With Niches (and Exactly What to Do about It)
(with Tad Hargrave)
In this exclusive FREE teleclass, we’ll discuss:
* How Many Target Markets Should You Have? Should You Really Just Have One?
* The 3 Elements of a Well-Rounded Niche
* How to Make Sure Your Niche is Authentic and Powerful vs. Contrived (Where You Feel Like a Fraud)
* Learn the Hidden Reasons Why Most Target Markets Fail
You’ve heard about how important it is to have a focused niche for a while.
You’ve fought it, resisted it, tried it and switched it… and you still feel stuck.
And you can’t sort out how to get unstuck.
Gah.
Meet Tad Hargrave…
Tad Hargrave is a hippy who developed a knack for marketing.
Despite years in the non-profit and activist world, he finally had to admit he was a marketing nerd and, in the end, he became a marketing coach for hippies.
For almost a decade, he has been touring his marketing workshops around Canada, bringing refreshing and unorthodox ideas to conscious entrepreneurs and green businesses that help them grow their organizations and businesses (without selling their souls). And, over the years, he has become recognized as a leader in the wider movement towards green and local economies.
His approach to pricing has made him a pioneer and documenter of the provocative new economy that is being written about and explored globally – the Pay What You Can Economy. It’s an economy where people decide on the price tag themselves.
His work has been featured in publications from the Edmonton Journal, Alberta Venture, The Edmonton Sun, The Globe and Mail, Alberta Report, IONS Review, Ed Magazine, React magazine and nationally on CBC Radio. In 2002, he was featured in the book Global Uprising and was chosen as one of the thirty leading young visionaries in North America by Utne Reader magazine in their September, 2002 edition.
LOLOLOLOLOL! Great intro video on your website Tad! Love the end music and appeal with a video etc. Thanks!!! John what video set up do you use. I’m using youtube since I know of no other.
oops. once again… Question for Tad. What video set up do you use? I currently use Youtube but your looks cleaner.
LOL more! Yours is Youtube! Ignore all questions above except my admiration!
ha. nice work!
Hi Tad,
Do you happen to have the name or website of the woman you mentioned from Winnepeg, who helps people who have tried but can’t created good communication in their families?
Thanks~ Jen
i believe this is her: http://ca.linkedin.com/pub/reverend-deborah-chester/a/993/1ba
Thanks, Tad!
I just realized that the scrunched up face headshot that Tad uses really appeals to skeptics such as myself. Is this an example of marketing to your niche? Or is it just an expression of a personality facet?
hey janina!
hrmmm. i just thought it was a funny and quirky photo that captured me and my mischief. and i liked that it didn’t feel like the standard headshot. i like quirk. so i guess more about capturing vibe and personality.
Thanks so much for being on the call! I find that images and metaphors work so well because it gets people out of their head and more into their heart. I’m glad you were able to add to your imagery.
hey anne, agreed!
Thanks for all the great info. I appreciate you putting yourselves out there and sharing these wonderful nuggets!
hey lucy! what were the top three bits you got from the call today?
Argh! Having Sealegs is my metaphor. Now I have a boat to get from one isleand to the other! Thank you Tad! PJ and Anne! Lots of fun! Very insightful!
isleand = ancient Californian for island! LOL!
This is such great information and permission for people who themselves don’t fit into “boxes” either as people or as entrepreneurs. Thank you this is an awesome symposium! It is so refreshing to be allowed to “live out of the box!”
thanks tamara. what were the best bits you got from the call today? top three things?
If you have many interests or feel your area of expertise would reach several groups would having a “general” service and offering “special projects” from time to time in more specific areas work? For example offering a detox program and offering help to specific groups such as caregivers of special needs children or aging parents.
hey lucy,
yes. that can work great. that’s the general idea. a promotion that’s targeted to a particular group will be way more successful than a general one. so that’s the upside. the downside:
1) for each new promotion to each new group you need to tailor your offer, rewrite your sales material, research the new hubs etc. a lot of work.
2) if you keep picking different groups to promote different services to then you may not become known for anything. there’s no platform/brand. unless you became the ‘detox queen’ kind of thing. but even then – word of mouth travels within communities. so, which communities? if you just do one offs in each community and don’t stay involved – you can be forgotten rapidly and not establish much of a presence at all.
I’m hoping this call will be available for replay. I missed the first minutes. Really want to hear it all! Thank you so much!

Tad was talking about the 4 things…
1. no niche at all
2. vague niche
did i miss 3 and 4?
3. Demographics
4. Who-Who-What (demographics / psychographics / problem)
Thank you I will re-listen to get the deets of those areas. Love this call!!
Tad–thank you for taking time today to assist us all with niche! I love love love those marketing bears (still) hilarious! I have narrowed my niche for my organic culinary nursery to:
I help Busy Families grow their own organic vegetables without using too much money, time or space.
I am wondering if I should narrow even further to Working Moms? or Busy Working Families? or could these be part of the mini circles within my big niche?
These are all topics I am familiar with. As a busy working and school going mom!
or…..
I help busy families get their home-gardens set up fast so they can enjoy growing fresh and organic vegetables without having to spend a lot of time, money or energy to get it done.
hey there,
thank you!
other people can watch the cartoon marketing bears here: http://marketingforhippies.com/free/free-marketing-videos/niche/
in terms of your situation, i think the ‘big circle’ is really clear so you might just have a few little circles within it. check out this . . .
http://marketingforhippies.com/big-circle-little-circles/
what do you think?
I love this! There are so many families that are trying to save money and be more self-sufficient at the same time. I’m thinking another distinction could be busy families with younger children or elementary aged children, or stay at home moms, or families where both adults work, or single parent families. Just some thoughts to get the ball rolling.
Aha! I help gay-friendly speakers to attract clients by coaching, certifying, and promoting them to leaders of our 2 million member network supporting same-sex marriage worldwide.
love! good for you!!
Tad’s niche & marketing workshop helped me to clarify my niche (core niche: gay-friendly professional speakers, and second niche: gay-friendly entrepreneurs on facebook), and my results went from five people (pre-niche) on a fb group to over 2 million people.
Thanks, Tad!
