How to Post Your Photo When Commenting on Blogs

Commenting on other people’s blogs as well as responding to comments on your own blog is a great way to use the power of social media in your favor, and I believe that having your photo appear beside your comment is even more powerful.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about how to do this so I figured I’d share this easy step-by-step system with you. Assuming you have a photo that you want to use saved on your computer, this process should take you less than 5 minutes.

Step 1: Choose a Photo
You can upload any size image file from your hard drive because large images will automatically be resized. You will have a chance to crop this image in Step 7, if necessary.

Step 2:  Go to http://en.gravatar.com/
Gravatar stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar.” Your avatar is a graphical representation of you (or your alter ego or character in some cases). Your Gravatar is an avatar that follows you from site to site and appears beside your blog comments.

Step 3: Click “Get your Gravatar today”
This button is on the left side of the screen about halfway down the page.

Step 4: Enter your e-mail address & click “Signup”
This should be the e-mail address that you want to use when you’re commenting on blogs. Often this is required to submit a comment.

Step 5: Check your e-mail for an activation link from Gravatar & click the link
The subject will probably be “Welcome to Gravatar,” and it will show up in less than a minute. If you don’t see the message right away, check your junk or spam folder.

Inside the e-mail there is an activation link. Click the link or paste it into the URL field on your web browser.

Step 6: Choose a Username & Password and click “Signup”
Click “Check” to find a desired username that’s available.

Step 7: Upload Your Photo

  1. Click the “My Account” Tab at top of the page and select “Add an Image” from the drop down menu.
  2. Select where you’d like to get the image from (your computer’s hard drive, an image on the internet, a webcam attached to your computer, or a previously uploaded image)
  3. Click “Browse” to find your photo & choose the one you want
  4. Click “Next”
  5. Crop your photo (if necessary)
  6. Click “Crop and Finish!”
  7. Choose a rating for your Gravatar (G, PG, R, X)

And there you go! Now, your photo will appear beside your blog comments (as long as you enter the e-mail address associated with your Gravatar).
